CASING
OUT A WINDOW
There
are lots of ways to trim out a window, most of which work. Here is
how I was taught from the master carpenter I worked under.
First
of all when you start out with the window you want to cut back the
drywall from the window. You want to make sure that the drywall is
cut back on an angle and there seems ample room between the window
and the drywall. This procedure will help in the installation of the
casing later.
Next
take the casing to your miter box and cut a 45 degree miter on each
piece. Make all your cuts one way for 4 pieces and then do the same
for the other side. Return to the window and using the same four
holes to reinstall the casing on the window. At this point the
casing should “roughly” fit.
Starting in the upper left hand or right hand corner bring the two
pieces of casing together with your hands. If you notice that the
joint doesn’t fit perfectly if you push the casing against the wall
and squeeze it together you need to make an adjustment. Typically
the outside edge of the 45 degree angle will hit but the inside will
be opened up. Take one piece back to the saw and adjust this by
cutting it slightly less than 45 degrees such as a 44 1/2 degree
miter. Make sure you don’t cut any
